What it is

Corns are concentrated areas of thickened skin, often with a central core. Calluses are broader areas of hard skin. Both commonly develop where repeated pressure or friction affects the foot.

Risks and concerns

They can make walking uncomfortable. Reduced feeling or poor circulation can make pressure injuries harder to notice. Persistent pressure may lead to skin breakdown, especially in higher-risk feet.

Treatment and support options

Options include suitable footwear, careful reduction of excess hard skin, moisturising advice and offloading. Persistent pressure may need podiatry or orthotic assessment. Seek professional advice before using medicated corn removers, especially with diabetes or reduced sensation.

How I can help

I assess the skin and likely pressure source, reduce excess hard skin when appropriate, and discuss offloading to redistribute pressure or reduce rubbing. Depending on the location, this may involve protective padding, toe separators, sleeves or other suitable cushioning.

Follow-up and care considerations

Offloading is checked for fit and comfort and reviewed at follow-up. Report rubbing, redness, moisture damage or increased discomfort from a pad. Recurrence is possible if pressure continues. Open skin or suspected infection needs prompt assessment.
