What it is
An ingrown toenail occurs when a nail edge presses into or grows into the surrounding skin. A curved or involuted nail may also create pressure along its sides.
Risks and concerns
Pain, swelling and inflamed skin can develop, and broken skin can become infected. Increasing redness, warmth, pus or spreading redness needs prompt medical assessment. Diabetes or poor circulation increases the need for early review.
Treatment and support options
Options depend on severity and include reducing footwear pressure, careful conservative nail care and nail correction for suitable nails. Recurrent or severe cases may need a podiatrist or physician to consider partial nail removal. Infection may require medical treatment.
How I can help
I assess the nail, skin and relevant health risks before discussing a care plan. Where suitable, I provide conservative trimming and filing, advice to reduce pressure, and Onyfix application with follow-up. I arrange referral advice when medical treatment is needed.
Onyfix and follow-up
Onyfix uses a light-cured composite band attached to the nail. It is designed to guide the nail shape as it grows. Suitability depends on the nail and surrounding skin; progress is gradual and repeat applications may be needed. Tell me about allergies and report irritation, new pain or a loose band. Results vary, and infection or persistent symptoms need reassessment.
