What it is
Thick or misshapen toenails can be difficult to trim and may press against shoes. Several causes can affect nail appearance. A clinical assessment helps determine whether testing or medical treatment is needed.
Risks and concerns
Pressure, snagging and brittle edges may cause discomfort or damage surrounding skin. Excessive thinning can leave a nail sensitive. Tell me about blood thinners, altered sensation or previous problems with healing.
Treatment and support options
Care may include trimming and reducing thickness, footwear changes, and investigation for suspected fungal infection. A prescriber may recommend topical or oral antifungal treatment. Routine professional nail debridement—carefully trimming and reducing thickened nail—can help topical antifungal medication penetrate the nail more effectively and support treatment results. Debridement complements the prescribed treatment; it does not replace antifungal medication. Oral treatment can require nail testing, medication review and blood tests.
How I can help
I assess the nail and surrounding skin, then trim, file and reduce thickness as appropriate using professional foot-care instruments. When you are using a prescribed topical antifungal, I can include routine nail debridement in your care plan to support its effectiveness. I aim to improve manageability and comfort, and recommend medical review where the cause is uncertain.
Follow-up and care considerations
Appearance improves at the pace of nail growth and depends on the cause. Reducing thickness helps manage the nail; confirmed infection may also need medication. Seek review for new redness, swelling, drainage or persistent pain.
